Summer is here! Many activities, vacations, outdoor activities, family reunions, friends, pools, barbecues and all those things we get to enjoy for such a short time, just during the SUMMER!
While we are ready to enjoy the Summer and everything that she offers us, we should not neglect our health. Many times because we do not stop and “waste time” drinking water, we become dehydrated little by little. Dehydration is not only thirst, but also one of its symptoms in the dryness of the skin, dry lips, headaches, dizziness, fainting, etc.
Not only do we become dehydrated when we are outside, we must also take into account our intake of liquids when we are indoors in times of high temperatures. It is important to pay special attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people who play sports.
The general council of Pharmaceutical Colleges presented last year a campaign to raise awareness about hydration. The tips collected are the following:
1. It is not necessary to be thirsty for liquids, because although thirst is a signal that warns us that we have to drink liquids, it is better to anticipate it. 2. Consume between 2 and 2.5 liters of daily fluids. These liquids can be consumed through food or drinks, being of special importance to maintain adequate hydration in the meals. 3. Heat and environmental dryness as well as other special circumstances may favor dehydration. If you have symptoms such as thirst, dry mucous membranes and skin or decrease in the amount of urine, drinks should be consumed to restore the water balance of the body.
4. In case of practicing any physical activity, even in a moderate way, hydration is essential before, during and after your practice, since the exercise produces the elimination of water and mineral salts. It is discouraged to exercise during the central hours of the day during the summer season. 5. Diets can vary the specific water requirements and, therefore, the hydration needs. However, it is important to maintain a routine model of fluid intake throughout the day, with special attention during times of heat and physical activity.
Remember to be aware of any symptoms of dehydration, the imbalance of minerals in the body is very dangerous, take care to fully enjoy the summer, maintain an optimal level of hydration.
